Announcement: Andrew Ullrich

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Andrew UllrichIt is with a heavy heart that I make this posting.

It has been reported that our Brother Andrew Ullrich passed away today.

Information is forthcoming. Please respect Andrew, his family, and friends by being patient in waiting for details.

I would like to include this passage from Lambda Chi Alpha Open Rituals, as I know how much the Fraternity meant to Andrew.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Andrew’s family and friends.

A time of grief is a time of Love, a time of Faith, and a time of Hope. Our faith in God supports us as we suffer the loss of a loved one. Our hope is strengthened by trust in God who assures us that He can and does sustain us. Love for each other reaches a new high as we come together to mourn, to bring someone we love to final rest, and to thank God for sharing His life with us through Brother Andrew Ullrich.

We are surrounded by signs which can offer to all of us the consolation which God provides at this time. The delicate, silvery crescent, rising in the sky, symbolizes for us birth; the birth of a soul. And as the crescent grows into the full moon reflecting the light of the sun, so does it represent the growth of a spiritual realization within us reflecting the glory of God.

May Peace be with you all.

The Witches of Whitewater

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

*NOTE: I just fixed the link to the movie preview. Our YouTube link was bad for an undetermined period of time. It is now working.

I just found this movie preview on YouTube thanks to an outside commenter, Kileen, who is a Whitewater native and former resident of Wells East. It appears the movie’s writers combined several items of Whitewater folklore (which were mentioned in our Halloween 2007 post) and fact and smashed them together to make a movie script.

Halloween: Creepy Whitewater

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Jack Border
Because it is Halloween, I have found some “creepy” stories about Whitewater. If you have comments or further info on any of these stories, be sure to add your comments!

The following stories are from WeirdUs.com

- The Morris Pratt Institute (a.k.a. The Spook’s Temple) once stood in Whitewater (Corner of West Center Street and South Fremont St.), and was the first school to ever be built whose focus was communicating with the spirit world and other related topics. Large crowds would gather on Sunday nights, when raucous public seances would be held outside of the Pratt Institute. The school moved out of Whitewater in 1946, but its legends remain part of the town’s folklore.

- There are some other true, but very strange, stories regarding Whitewater. On Halloween in 1970, the community was shocked to find that the open grave of a young girl had been hijacked from a local graveyard and placed on the mall of the University’s campus. Two fishermen had seen strange lights floating around one of the cemeteries (which form a perfect isosceles triangle, not a five pointed star) the previous night.

- It is well known that there are a series of underground tunnels that form an intricate maze below Whitewater. It is believed that they were used as part of the Underground Railroad. Others say the tunnels have a much darker purpose, and are actually used by witches, who can travel safely within them without exposing their use of the black arts.

Wells Hall- Speaking of witches, there are two spots on campus that have been claimed as the meeting grounds for these practitioners of magic. The field where Wells Hall, a dormitory, now stands, was once a major meeting place for witch covens. Rumors claim that an altar exists somewhere underneath Wells Hall, around which a number of bodies are buried upright.

Starin Park Water Tower- The other witch hotspot is the water tower in Starin Park, known colloquially as Witches Tower. One Halloween, students placed calls to the police after seeing a group of people clad in robes performing a ceremony by candlelight next to the tower. The tower is locked up and surrounded by barbed wire, but rumors still persist that it is a meeting place for witches. (**Note from Jeff: The barbed wire fence that surrounded the Tower when I was in school faced inward toward the Tower, rumor is that it was put up to keep the witches locked in the Tower…not to keep people out of it).

- The most fascinating rumors regarding Whitewater and its darker aspects regard the secret literature locked within the University’s library. Apparently, the contents of a certain book are so volatile that four different people have killed themselves after reading it. Three were University students, and one was a local resident who was found in a gas station with his wrists slashed. The luckier ones have merely gone completely mad after reading these books. Because of this, the library now keeps this powerful book under lock and key – its contents remain unknown.

2007 Homecoming Royal Purple Ad-Thumb
(Above) Our advertisement in the Homecoming Issues of the Royal Purple

Our Alumni Association President Marty Hoke and our Housing Corporation President Tom Boelk would like thank all of the Brothers who were able to attend the 2007 Homecoming events in Whitewater.

Lambda Chi Alumni met at the House at 416 West North Street at 11am and walked to the game at 1pm. At Halftime, the Warhawks were up on the UW-Oshkosh Titans 10-0. Brother Darren Hafford was up for a University Commerical Award, and while his entry was not chosen, a friend of Darren’s did win, so we congratulate him. The Warhawks went on to topple the Titans, 26-14. Aside from the win, a game highlight was Warhawk runningback Justin Beaver surpassing 5000 career rushing yards to become the first running back in UW-Whitewater and WIAC history to do so.

Brothers reconviened at the Brass Rail for the telling of stories and several games of pool. Alumni from several generations were represented. A big tip of the hat to all Alumni who made cash donations to the North American Food Drive during the homecoming weekend.

We are looking forward to Homecoming 2008 when we are planning to support our new Colony of Brothers to the fullest extents possible. Make plans now to attend Homecoming 2008!

Whitewater Homecoming 2007

Whitewater WarhawksFrom what I can tell, the theme of Homecoming 2007 is “Our Favorite Combo”.
…and I have no idea what that relates to.

Events for Whitewater Homecoming 2007:
Parade 10am - Main Street
Football Game vs. UW-Oshkosh 1pm - Perkins Stadium
A complete list is available by clicking here.

The Alumni Association is still putting together plans for a Homecoming gathering. If you are interested in attending, please reply to this post (by clicking COMMENTS) and comment with your name and what your plans are for the weekend. Any gathering at the House is still under review, as we need to clear that with the tennants who are currently living there (as they are not Lambda Chi’s).

Plans so far include:
- Running a supportive advertisement in the Royal Purple from the Lambda Chi Alpha Alumni Association
- Showing our spirit by attending the Parade and Game wearing Lambda Chi Alpha letters

Keep checking the website (and emails) for updates.

Our local history

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Chi Delta Rho 1939 HouseDid you know that Lambda Chi Alpha is the 2nd oldest Fraternal organization in Whitewater? Only surpassed by Phi Chi Epsilon, Lambda Chi Alpha has roots as a Fraternal organization that goes back to 1929!

I have begun to compile our local history of an organization in Whitewater. Currently, I have all entries from Whitewater’s Official Yearbook, The Minneiska, from 1932-1990. This details the history of our organization, begining with a Fraternity known as Beta Kappa Nu, to Chi Delta Rho, to Delta Kappa, back to Chi Delta Rho and finally becoming Lambda Chi Alpha.

As I put together a complete history and map out all of the houses our Fraternity(s) have used throughout the years, I ask all of you to contribute any information you have to this effort. I am specifically looking for documents, photographs and other items that would prove useful in this documentation.

If you have materials or stories you would like to share and add to our local history, email me eChopper…remove the parens from the email address. If you do not have means to scan these documents to email, let me know and I will make arrangements to get the from/to you in an orderly fashion.
