Only in the past year have I discovered that Brother Matthew Nelson and I are within 10 miles of one another each day. I work for the University of Minnesota (in St. Paul) and Matt is a student at the University of Minnesota School of Law (in Minneapolis). Being “out of my element” in Minnesota, it is great to have a Lambda Chi Brother to have lunch with.

Matt, we were both in school at the same time, but what years were you in Whitewater and what degree did you earn?

From 1995 until 1999…I earned my Bachelor of Business Administration with a Major in MCS (Management Computer Systems).

And what are you doing now, professionally?

I’m going for my JDMBA at the Business Law School at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities.

I was an undergrad when Kevin Shumate joined us as a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. Having been a transfer student who was an upper-classman, Kevin had many unique ideas and experiences he brought with him. His efforts and attitudes towards the Fraternity came full circle when he took on the roll as Chapter President in Fall of 2000. I am very excited to have gotten an interview from this somewhat-elusive Lambda Chi…enjoy!

Kevin, where did you attend college?

Before coming to Whitewater I was at UW-Madison for 2 years and then 3 years at Whitewater.

And what degree did you attain?

BS in Geography

What are you doing now, professionally?

I work for the federal government in Virginia- here is me in a dunk tank putting your tax dollars to work

I have had the opportunity to correspond with Tom Filak about Alumni Association happenings and his ideas of making the returning Chapter even more successful. Getting back to our regular routine of Alumni Interviews, I am pleased to share with all of you my interview with Brother Thomas Filak.

Tom, what years did you attend UW-Whitewater and what is your degree in?

I started in Whitewater in 2003. I was previously at UW Superior in 2002. I graduated Whitewater in 2007 with a Bachelors of Science and Communication.

What are you doing now, professionally?

I work for AT&T as a retail sales manager. I’ve been working for them for the past three years, and had previously been selling their product for an indirect company.

Dain was a great Philanthropic Chairman while we undergrads together. He really put his heart into all community outreach efforts.

For everyone that wasn’t in school with us, Dain, what years were you in Whitewater and what did you graduate with?

I was an undergrad from 1998 to 2003…and I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

What are you doing now, professionally?

I’m a political operative for a candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. After the campaign is over, I hope to return to the Wisconsin Capitol as a Legislative Aide

Our featured Interview this week is with Brother Terry Lawler (Lambda-Iota 151). Terry joined in the era right after Chi Delta Rho transitioned into Lambda Chi Alpha. Terry has answered the call to assist in Recolonizing Lambda Chi Alpha in Whitewater. He has been an active participant in University / Fraternity relations for many years.

Terry, when were you in school in Whitewater?
I attended Whitewater from 1964-68 and again from 1973-77.

Two times! What degrees did you attain from your times in Whitewater?
I hold a Bachelor of Education and an Master of Science in Teaching.

I know that you are now retired, but while you were out in the business world, what did you do for a living?
I taught English at Tremper High School in Kenosha for over 33 years. I was English Department Chairman for fourteen of those years. In the last five years, a fellow retiree and I have been operating a small private tutoring business, E&L Educational Enterprises.

For those that don’t know you, Don, tell us when you were an undergraduate at Whitewater and what did you study?
From 1987 - 1992 attained a BBA in Marketing and MSE in Business Education.

What are you doing now, professionally?
I am a local consultant who assists over 450 schools in 5 countries in building their library collections and purchasing materials for student circulation.

I am pleased to present my interview with Richard “Red” Moeller, a continuing contributor to the Alumni Association website and recolonizing efforts at Whitewater. I would personally like to thank him for all of the stories and information he has shared…and for this interview.

Red, you are the first Chi Delta Rho / Delta Kappa Brother I have interviewed for the website. Tell us, when were you an Undergrad at Whitewater and what did you major in?
From 1960 to 1964 and I studied Business Education.

What are you doing now, professionally? 
I retired in 2004. I taught business subjects from 1964-1970, then headed a program for At-Risk Students at Franklin High School until 1973.  In 1974, I purchased Remy Battery until 2004 when I sold the company to two of my sons in 2004.

What are you doing now, for fun? 
My family has a home in northern Wisconsin that we use year around.  I downhill ski in the winter, fish, bike and trail ride with an ATV in the summer. (*NOTE: the image to the left is Red at his family’s annual mud wrestling championship).

This is our first interview with an Undergraduate Lambda Chi. Aaron Lauzon has been at Whitewater since 2004. In my conversations with him, I can tell you he is a bright young man with a lot of heart. I am truly proud to call him our Brother!

Aaron, you are the first Undergrad I have interviewed for the website…so, tell me, what are you majoring in?
I am majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Coaching.

Are you graduating this spring? What do you hope to do afterwards? Where would you like to work when you do graduate?
I will be graduating in the spring of 2009. Education is now a 5 year program. I would really like to end up somewhere around the Madison area.

We all know that school takes up almost all of the free time in the day…but when you find a few extra minutes, what do you do for fun?
I am a Big Brother for Big Brothers/Big Sisters…other than that I just try to balance my busy school schedule and an even busier social life.

After joining Facebook and creating the Lambda Chi Alpha : Wisconsin-Whitewater group, I re-connected with Brother Peter Jacquin. I remember Pete from our undergrad days, Pete was the charismatic Scholastics Chair. He and I have been corresponding through Facebook ever since. (This is my soft-sell for joining Facebook and our Chapter’s group). I interviewed Pete for the website and I am pleased to share it with you now!

What did you major in while you were at Whitewater?
Political science and Psychology

What are you doing now, professionally?
I am a skydiving instructor living in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

This month we feature Marty Hoke (LI-Z 522) who is the President of the UW-W Lambda Chi Alpha Alumni Association.


For Brothers who don’t know who you are, can you give us a brief background about yourself and what you do for a living?

I graduated from Whitewater in 1988 and was actively involved with Lambda Chi from 1984-1988. I am married and have three children-one girl and two boys. I work as the Corporate Treasurer for Uline Shipping Supplies in Waukegan, Ill, where I have worked since 2000.

Marty, you are the President of the Alumni Association. Now that Housing Corps and the Alumni Association are seperate entities, what roles do you see the Alumni Association taking?

The Alumni Association is charged with keeping alumni involved and active as we prepare for Lambda Chi to recolonize in Whitewater (hopefully, Fall 2008). Once Lambda Chi recolonizes, members of the Alumni Association will act as mentors to each elected officer of Lambda Iota-Zeta. The Alumni Association will also be informed of issues that could warrant disciplinary action against the chapter by the University and be given the chance to rectify the situation before disciplinary action is taken by the University.
