What follows is a letter from our new Alumni Association President, Michael Easton. Mike attended the University of Wisconsin Whitewater from 1994-1998, rushing Lambda Chi Alpha in the fall of 1994. As an undergraduate, he served as the Fraternity Secretary and Vice President, along with participating in the diving team and stunt squad. Many of you may remember Mike being the school mascot, Willy the Warhawk, during his time at Whitewater. After graduation, Mike attended the University of Miami (FL) Law School, where he graduated from in 2001, his focus on elder law and estate planning. He has served as a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Alumni Association and now has been elected as our new Alumni Association President.
I would have preferred to introduce myself earlier, but these first 2 weeks of my term as President have seen significant developments that the Alumni Association is now proud to share with you. Due to the tremendous efforts put forth by the Alumni Association and Housing Corporation over the past three years, the International Fraternity sent representatives to campus recently to begin the recruitment process. Although recruitment hasn’t resulted in tremendous numbers, Internationals has preached and successfully implemented a quality over quantity approach to recruitment. Currently an ‘interest group’ made up of a small core group of motivated student leaders is being formed. This interest group will function somewhat like a typical chapter until its members have identified and recruited enough similarly motivated and quality men to properly function as a small chapter. At that time, we will petition the International Fraternity to return to campus and initiate the members of our revitalized chapter.
Our return to campus would not have been possible without the hard work of many people, too numerous to point out. However, I do wish to recognize our leaders over the past 3 years, without whom, we would not be reopening our chapter. First, I would like to recognize my predecessor as President of the Alumni Association, Marty Hoke. Marty held us together through some very tough times and deserves the gratitude of all our alumni for his efforts.
I also hope the alumni will recognize all members of the Housing Corporation, as it is largely made up of the same members today as it was fifteen years ago. In particular, I would like to identify the new President of the Housing Corporation, Don Reinbold. He served as Vice President of the Alumni Association for the past three years and we look forward to working with him as the new President of the Housing Corporation in the future.
Finally and most importantly, we must all recognize the efforts of Tom Boelk, who recently announced that he would be stepping down as High Pi of our chapter. Tom has seen us through good times and bad, and never once wavered in his devotion to the survival of this chapter. Without Tom, most of us would never have had the opportunity to join this fraternity. Now that he has seen us through one final period of adversity, he has stepped down and deserves our gratitude.
The Alumni Association is looking forward to a successful expansion of our chapter. Please try to get involved. We have a very bright future and I can assure you all that the more involved you become the more pride you will take in our success.
Michael (Willy) Easton
