Alumni Interview: Kevin Shumate

Kevin too-close for comfortI was an undergrad when Kevin Shumate joined us as a member of Lambda Chi Alpha. Having been a transfer student who was an upper-classman, Kevin had many unique ideas and experiences he brought with him. His efforts and attitudes towards the Fraternity came full circle when he took on the roll as Chapter President in Fall of 2000. I am very excited to have gotten an interview from this somewhat-elusive Lambda Chi…enjoy!

Kevin, where did you attend college?

Before coming to Whitewater I was at UW-Madison for 2 years and then 3 years at Whitewater.

And what degree did you attain?

BS in Geography

Elvis WeddingDo you have any accomplishments you would like to share?

It’s not really an accomplishment, but I did get married by Elvis, though I don’t think it was the ‘real’ Elvis- What do you think?

Where did you go to high school, when did you graduate?

Parker High School in Janesville, WI and I graduated in 1994.

Where are you living now?

Outside of Charlottesville, Virginia.

Are you married? Do you have kids?

I am married and have no children.

Kevin in uniform at Arlington National CemetaryAny big surprises in your life that people would find interesting?

I moved to Colorado Springs after graduating and enlisted in the Army in October of 2001. Me at Arlington National Cemetary in 2005.

How did you get involved with the Lambda Chi Alpha (who introduced you to the Fraternity) ? And when did you join?

A one Mr. Sean McKinnon and I joined in Spring of 1999.

Did you live in the House, if so, what room(s), did you have a favorite room and why?

I lived in rooms 5 and 8. I think I liked room five the best because Luke Villwock couldn’t break in that room via the fire escape.

Did you hold any offices?

High Tau (Treasurer) and High Alpha (President).

Did you win any awards or have accomplishments you are proud of?

I won the Mason Award one semester.

Why did you decide to run for President of Lambda Chi Alpha?

I ran for President because I was tired of sharing a room with Scott Johnson for first five years after graduating high school (j/k Scott). Actually, it is the same reason why any Brother stays involved with the Fraternity by showing up at meetings and events. Because you want to keep a great tradition going and give back to a fantastic organization.

Do you have any tips for anyone who is planning to be president in the future?

Stay involved, stay focused on the Fraternity’s goals, and keep a positive attitude.

Is there anyone you have lost touch with over the years that you would like to catch up with?

EJ (Eric Johnson)

Are there any guys you keep in touch with still? How do you maintain contact, phone, email?

I still keep in contact with Harold once in a while and I see Sean McKinnon about twice a year when I get home, to Wisconsin.

What are your best memories of Lambda Chi?

I lived in the house every summer for three years (for the unbeatable price of $100, or two tanks of gas now) and hanging out with the guys was always a trip.

What is the one Lambda Chi related event that made you say “Wow, I never thought I would be doing this when I joined a fraternity”?

Cleaning up a highway. Sean promised me we would provide no benefit to the community (haha), oh well.

Can you still recite the Greek Alphabet?

I think so, let me try, no I can’t.

Did you have any nicknames in college? Would you care to share them?

Yes. Deer Nutz from 6’5″ and then Shumate from everyone else (real original).

Do you remember who your Big Brother was? Did you have any Little Brothers? Who?

Moose (Chad Knasinski, sorry if your last named misspelled) was my big brother and Mr. Fuzz Martin was my little brother.

Anyone you want to give a shout out to?

You, Mr. Reisdorfer, for keeping this fantastic website up and running.
