REUNION FORMAL 2011

Monday, January 31st, 2011

100_0903

Brothers,

It’s that time of year again.  Soon, spring will arrive and the days will  get longer.  The temperatures, warmer.  Spring is the season of Rebirth and Renewal. It’s the time of the year when flowers burst forth from the ground and leaves return to our trees. It’s the time of year when younglings emerge from their hibernation sleep and take their first steps out into the world.  What better time then, for us to celebrate the Rebirth and Renewal of Lambda Chi Alpha- Lambda Iota Zeta.  To that end, we will be holding the 2nd Annual Alumni Reunion Formal this spring.

This year, we have so much to celebrate and be thankful for. We have finally achieved Colony Status after 3 long, hard years of work by High Pi Nick Wiesensel and the men of the interest group. It is because of their hard work and dedication that we are able to say proudly… We’re Back!  In addition to this phenomenal feat, we have also finally become able to reconnect with over 1/3 of our alumni base, and that number grows daily.  As we move forward in life, it’s important that we take a moment and look back at where we came from, to remember those moments in our life that made us the men we are today.  We should take the time to reflect on those bonds of brotherhood that were forged in Whitewater and designed to last a life time.

Join us as we prepare to initiate our newest brothers into the bond of Zeta Alpha Chi, and share with those who came after you and in doing so, relive your youth.  Reconnect with your brothers, old and new as Lambda Chi Alpha Lambda Iota Zeta moves toward the future.  Help us show the newest brothers in the bond the meaning of True Brotherhood.  LAMBDA CHI ALPHA……. NOT 4 YEARS, 4 LIFE.

Formal will be held in one of Geneva National Golf Resort’s beautiful and spacious Banquet halls. Dinner will be catered, and those in attendance will have their choice of Chicken or Pork Rack. Start time for the event is set for 5pm. More information on the night’s activities can be found below.

  • Chi Delta Rho (2nd Generation) Badge

    Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Many thanks to Brother Terry Esrael for these two pins.
First, this great Chi Delta Rho Badge.

This is (what I call) a 2nd Generation Chi Delta Rho Badge, from the years of Chi Delta Rho at UW-W between the Delta Kappa generation and the beginning of Lambda Chi Alpha in 1965. It depicts the 2nd Gen. Chi Delta Rho Coat of Arms/Crest, which was very similar to the original Chi Delta Rho Crest, but was adapted to have 2 elements from the Delta Kappa Crest.

Secondly, Brother Esrael sent a Lambda Chi Alpha letters recognition pin.

Also, Terry sent 3 composites which I will be sharing with all of you, shortly! Thanks again to Brother Terry Esrael for these great submissions to the archives. If you have items you would like included in the archives, please comment here or email me at:

Warhawk football was a big topic of conversation. Brother Dunbar was pleased to find that Chancellor Telfer taught at the high school in Elkhorn (Wisconsin), where Martin grew up.

The Father of Veterans Day has ties to Lambda Chi Alpha

    Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

From the November 2008 issue of the Cross & Crescent

    The Father of Veterans Day
Max C. FlotoMax C. Floto (Gettysburg 1918) grew up in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, and was the oldest of these three men. Floto and Lybarger were elected officers of the Chess Club in 1916 and also faced each other on the inter-class debating team as sophomore and freshman, respectively. Floto was on the 1917-18 championship debating team. Later, in 1927, and after the chapter became Pennsylvania-Alpha of Theta Kappa Nu, they continued their close association and their support by serving on the chapter’s Alumni Association Board.

Floto graduated in 1918 with a degree in accounting; a year before the other two. He’d also been active in ROTC and was immediately drafted into the U.S. Army in June 1918. “I was a member of the largest band of draftees that ever left Connellsville,” Floto once said. He also remembered that he was one of only three draftees wearing a uniform that day because it had been required by ROTC. The war ended with an armistice, signed on November 11, 1918.

In 1919, Floto made a motion before the Milton L. Bishop Post 301 of the American Legion in Connellsville to make November 11 a holiday and to be known as Armistice Day. The motion passed on September 11, 1919, but Floto wasn’t satisfied to stop with convincing just his hometown. He and another veteran successfully petitioned the first-ever American Legion state convention in Harrisburg, and lobbied the State of Pennsylvania to declare it a legal holiday. It was approved by the legislature on March 31, 1921.

They then moved their petition to the national level. “We had a dozen or so Congressmen working on it,” Floto said in an interview with the (Connellsville) Daily Courier in 1978. A resolution was presented in practically every session of Congress until it was finally passed, and then signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 13, 1938.

The name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954. Then Congress voted in 1971 to shift the observance to the fourth Monday in October and Floto immediately became part of a committee that battled to have the holiday returned to its original date of significance, Nov. 11. In 1975 they were successful. A Certificate of Appreciation signed by Congressional Rep. Hamilton Fish, Jr., was presented in 1978 to Max Floto and designated him “Father of Armistice Day.”

Max Floto died January 13, 1985.

    The Paedagogus – Cenetennial Edition

    Thursday, October 16th, 2008

The 51st Edition of the Paedagogus just came out…and highlighting the Centennial of our Fraternity.

The cover of the Paed is a deep green and embossed in gold leafing with the title and the Centennial logo.

The first thing you will notice about this Centennial Edition is that it is printed completely in color! A beautiful surprise, to say the least. Also, this education manual has been updated with all of the latest Lambda Chi Alpha information, logos, officer descriptions, Chapter Histories and other Lambda Chi national information. And while Lambda-Iota Zeta was not an active Chapter while this book was published, there are quite a few obvious (and 1 or 2 subtle) Lambda-Iota references.

A letter from our Alumni Association President

    Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

What follows is a letter from our new Alumni Association President, Michael Easton. Mike attended the University of Wisconsin Whitewater from 1994-1998, rushing Lambda Chi Alpha in the fall of 1994. As an undergraduate, he served as the Fraternity Secretary and Vice President, along with participating in the diving team and stunt squad. Many of you may remember Mike being the school mascot, Willy the Warhawk, during his time at Whitewater. After graduation, Mike attended the University of Miami (FL) Law School, where he graduated from in 2001, his focus on elder law and estate planning. He has served as a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Alumni Association and now has been elected as our new Alumni Association President.

    Brothers,

I would have preferred to introduce myself earlier, but these first 2 weeks of my term as President have seen significant developments that the Alumni Association is now proud to share with you. Due to the tremendous efforts put forth by the Alumni Association and Housing Corporation over the past three years, the International Fraternity sent representatives to campus recently to begin the recruitment process. Although recruitment hasn’t resulted in tremendous numbers, Internationals has preached and successfully implemented a quality over quantity approach to recruitment. Currently an ‘interest group’ made up of a small core group of motivated student leaders is being formed. This interest group will function somewhat like a typical chapter until its members have identified and recruited enough similarly motivated and quality men to properly function as a small chapter. At that time, we will petition the International Fraternity to return to campus and initiate the members of our revitalized chapter.

Our return to campus would not have been possible without the hard work of many people, too numerous to point out. However, I do wish to recognize our leaders over the past 3 years, without whom, we would not be reopening our chapter. First, I would like to recognize my predecessor as President of the Alumni Association, Marty Hoke. Marty held us together through some very tough times and deserves the gratitude of all our alumni for his efforts.

I also hope the alumni will recognize all members of the Housing Corporation, as it is largely made up of the same members today as it was fifteen years ago. In particular, I would like to identify the new President of the Housing Corporation, Don Reinbold. He served as Vice President of the Alumni Association for the past three years and we look forward to working with him as the new President of the Housing Corporation in the future.

Finally and most importantly, we must all recognize the efforts of Tom Boelk, who recently announced that he would be stepping down as High Pi of our chapter. Tom has seen us through good times and bad, and never once wavered in his devotion to the survival of this chapter. Without Tom, most of us would never have had the opportunity to join this fraternity. Now that he has seen us through one final period of adversity, he has stepped down and deserves our gratitude.

The Alumni Association is looking forward to a successful expansion of our chapter. Please try to get involved. We have a very bright future and I can assure you all that the more involved you become the more pride you will take in our success.

    In ZAX,
    Michael (Willy) Easton
