BirthdayCakeWith over 950 Lambda Chi Alpha Brothers, it’s often hard for many of us to keep up with one another’s birthdays.

Fuzzy has written a great application for the website which displays the names of Alumni who have a Birthday in the current month. Be sure to scroll down the page and see the list of Alumni Birthdays in the right column.

Interview: Richard “Red” Moeller

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Moeller63I am pleased to present my interview with Richard “Red” Moeller, a continuing contributor to the Alumni Association website and recolonizing efforts at Whitewater. I would personally like to thank him for all of the stories and information he has shared…and for this interview.

Red, you are the first Chi Delta Rho / Delta Kappa Brother I have interviewed for the website. Tell us, when were you an Undergrad at Whitewater and what did you major in?
From 1960 to 1964 and I studied Business Education.

What are you doing now, professionally?
I retired in 2004. I taught business subjects from 1964-1970, then headed a program for At-Risk Students at Franklin High School until 1973.  In 1974, I purchased Remy Battery until 2004 when I sold the company to two of my sons in 2004.

MudRedWhat are you doing now, for fun?
My family has a home in northern Wisconsin that we use year around.  I downhill ski in the winter, fish, bike and trail ride with an ATV in the summer. (*NOTE: the image to the left is Red at his family’s annual mud wrestling championship).

Our Houses, Then & Now (pt. 2)

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

This House is located at 965 West Main Street. In 1961, it was the home to 35 of our Delta Kappa Brothers and their House Mother, Mrs. Palm. It now has a new brick facade and is a DLK Apartment building.

Many thanks to Brothers Mingo Nicks and Chris Zimbrick for taking these photos of our Fraternity Houses.

We would like to recognize:
Lt. Eldon Broman: Chi Delta Rho (1942)

We recognize Brother Broman’s courage and perseverance as a World War II pilot and Prisoner of War.

B-17s Over BerlinI first learned of Brother Broman and his experience while reading the 1944 Whitewater Minneiska Yearbook. Further research yielded a publication titled “B-17s Over Berlin: Personal Stories from the 95th Bomb Group (H) “by Ian Hawkins which includes a full account of Brother Broman’s story, in his own words. (Click here to read a preview from Google Book Search)

The recount tells of Brother Broman piloting a B-17F Bomber over Germany which was shot down, his undercover travels through Holland under an assumed identity, his capture by Nazi SS troops and finally his release as a Prisoner of War. (I will print a better account when my copy arrives).
(*Note: Brother Broman attended the Homecoming Banquet in 1946, as reported by the 1946 Minneiska)

Thank you to all of our Brothers who have given so much without thought of their own sacrifices.

If your deserving name was not listed, we apologize. Please comment on this post, or email Jeff eChopper and it will be added immediately.

Our Houses, Then & Now

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Did you know that throughout the history of our organization, Chi Delta Rho, Delta Kappa and Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternities have lived in 9 houses in Whitewater?

We are in the process of documenting all of the houses with “Then & Now” pictures.

Here are the first two we have for you, click on the image to see larger, more detailed pictures.

Our local history

Chi Delta Rho 1939 HouseDid you know that Lambda Chi Alpha is the 2nd oldest Fraternal organization in Whitewater? Only surpassed by Phi Chi Epsilon, Lambda Chi Alpha has roots as a Fraternal organization that goes back to 1929!

I have begun to compile our local history of an organization in Whitewater. Currently, I have all entries from Whitewater’s Official Yearbook, The Minneiska, from 1932-1990. This details the history of our organization, begining with a Fraternity known as Beta Kappa Nu, to Chi Delta Rho, to Delta Kappa, back to Chi Delta Rho and finally becoming Lambda Chi Alpha.

As I put together a complete history and map out all of the houses our Fraternity(s) have used throughout the years, I ask all of you to contribute any information you have to this effort. I am specifically looking for documents, photographs and other items that would prove useful in this documentation.

If you have materials or stories you would like to share and add to our local history, email me eChopper…remove the parens from the email address. If you do not have means to scan these documents to email, let me know and I will make arrangements to get the from/to you in an orderly fashion.

History of Delta Kappa Fraternity

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Delta Kappa COADelta Kappa was a big part of our Fraternity and how it came to be. Delta Kappa is a big part of our Fraternity on a local level. The following history is taken and adapted from the Fall 1961 issue of The Deltan, the official Delta Kappa National Newsletter. -Special thanks to Brother Red Moeller for sharing these materials with us all.

The First Incorporation

Delta Kappa National Fraternity was originally founded under the name of Kappa Kappa Kappa at State Teachers College, Buffalo, New York, in 1920 by five men who constituted almost the entire male registration at that time. The purpose of the Fraternity was to foster the development of fellowship, scholarship, and leadership through the socializing influence of fraternal life.

The success of the venture was so pronounced that other schools soon became aware of the benfits to be derived and petitioned for installation of chapters.

Fraternity History in Whitewater

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

I have been doing some research, tapping into the archives department at Anderson Library at the University in Whitewater. I have received scans of Whitewater yearbooks (formerly known as the Minneiska) from years in the early 30’s-60’s. The remaining years from the 70’s-early 90’s (when the publication ceased printing) will be in my possession shortly. I will be putting together a complete history of Lambda Chi Alpha, Chi Delta Rho, Delta Kappa, and Beta Kappa Nu lineage throughout our existance in Whitewater. Check out a sample of the great photos, such as this one of Chi Delta Rho from 1937 (click thumbnail to enlarge).

Chi Delta Rho 1937

Besides all of the great photos, we can trace the movement of the Fraternity houses throughout the city as Chi Delta Rho and Delta Kappa moved several times.

Moeller63Keep your eyes out for the history to be posted soon, as well as photos to be posted for enjoyment of everyone. Speaking of which, here is a photo of a major contributor to the site: Brother Red Moeller from 1963.

These materials are fantastic and I would like to thank the Archive Department at the Anderson Library and their zeal in finding materials related to our Fraternity.

Delta Kappa: Crest

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Delta Kappa COAIn attempts be better understand out past in Whitewater, I present you information about Delta Kappa. Here is a description of the Delta Kappa Crest, from the Spring 1961 Deltan (Delta Kappa National Newsletter). I assume these are the “open” meanings of the crest and that we are not giving away any DK mysteries. Click the Crest to see a larger version. Thanks to Brother Red Moeller for the Delta Kappa/Chi Delta Rho materials that included this information.

A symbol of the fraternity since the brotherhood’s earilist beginnings, the Crest of Delta Kappa contains many elements that are deeply interwoven wih the fraternity’s purpose and philosophy.

Chi Delta Rho & Delta Kappa

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

Chi Delta RhoMany of you may be confused as to why we include pictures and stories from Fraternities named other than Lambda Chi Alpha. “Know your roots”. For those who don’t know, before Lambda Chi in Whitewater we were originally Chi Delta Rho and Delta Kappa Fraternities. To that end, I have put together a Local History page. You can access it by clicking the link in the right navigation.

Delta KappaI would like to thank Brother Red Moeller for providing a bounty of materials to get the Local History started. Of course, the page is still under production as I continue to add dates and events up to current.

If I have missed something or made a radical error, please comment on this thread or email me: eChopper with any additions and edits.

Delta Kappa 1 Thanks to Brother Dick Olsen for this photo. Brothers Dick Olsen and Red Moeller say that by 1960, Pledges were still required to carry pledge paddles, pledge books, wear black pants, white shirts, black vests, but were no longer required to wear the fake mustaches (as seen in other Pledge photos). Wednesday July 18, 2007
Great Wolf Lodge, Wisconsin Dells
Annual Luncheon

Greetings Brothers,
We (The Delta Kappa & Chi Delta Rho Brothers) will be gathering prior to 12-noon. We will have an off-the-menu lunch as before. The Great Wolf Lodge has been accomodating us and will be serving us if we eat after 1pm. Also note: the ladies are welcome and many do attend. There is a new outlet mall open next door, I think it is within walking distance.
