I have had the opportunity to correspond with Tom Filak about Alumni Association happenings and his ideas of making the returning Chapter even more successful. Getting back to our regular routine of Alumni Interviews, I am pleased to share with all of you my interview with Brother Thomas Filak.

Tom, what years did you attend UW-Whitewater and what is your degree in?

I started in Whitewater in 2003. I was previously at UW Superior in 2002. I graduated Whitewater in 2007 with a Bachelors of Science and Communication.

What are you doing now, professionally?

I work for AT&T as a retail sales manager. I’ve been working for them for the past three years, and had previously been selling their product for an indirect company.

UPDATE: (from Paula Mohan): We are cancelling the meeting between university officials and the Lambda Chi alumni scheduled for Tuesday, 2/26/08, because of the storm that will be hitting all of Southern Wisconsin on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, 2/26/08, at 6:30-7:30 pm, Room 275B in the new University Center, the members of the Alumni Association are invited to a meeting with the three University Officials who will work most closely with the new Colony, once it is approved. Everyone is invited, Chi Delta Rho and Delta Kappa Alumni, included.

Social-networking websites are all the rage, nowadays. The two front-runners on the social-networking scene, MySpace and Facebook, feature an open, fun, and rather sophomoric approach to networking. Emerging through the online networking ranks, however, is a website called “LinkedIn” — and it’s strictly business.

LinkedIn allows you to post your career profile, network with other players in your field, keep tabs on colleagues and former employees, find jobs, find employees, and catch up with those whom you used to go to school with and/or work with.

As business in America becomes more and more of a who-you-know-not-what-you-know venture, utilizing all of the networking tools at your disposal is vital to your success. If you’re already LinkedIn, I urge you to post your LinkedIn profile link in the comment section, below. If you’re not linked in, I highly recommend that you set up your completely free profile today and link with as many brothers and former college acquaintances as you can.

Safe travels to a group of our Brothers who are off to visit Lambda Chi Alpha Headquarters in Indianapolis, IN.

Aaron Lauzon, Dustin Scholz, Mark Volz, CJ Kactro, Matt Lahl, Peter Reynolds, and Derek Blaszak are driving out today to see where all of the Fraternity business is handled. We are anticipating all of the photos from the HQ tour (and hopefully some *bonus* snaps of items that are locked in the Fraternity vault, which are not always brought out for tours).

Thanks for Brothers Chris Barrick, Tom Smith and John Holloway for accommodating our Lambda-Iota Brothers.

I have been in communications with the Milton College Preservation Society about the Gamma Chapter of Chi Delta Rho which existed there while Milton College was still in operation. The MCPS has been very accomodating and has taken the time to send us copies of Chi Delta Rho materials and photographs.

These items will help us in putting together a complete history of our Fraternity, as well as the history of Chi Delta Rho as a Fraternity.

Some of us may know some of our more famous Brothers, President Harry Truman, Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun …Kenny Chesney. But many of our other Brothers who have made major advancements and achieved recognition in their chosen fields are less know to many Lambda Chi’s throughout the world.

Those of you who study psychology and human behavior, as well as fans of the televison show Lost may be surprised to learn that Psychologist B.F. Skinner was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha as well.

According to Wikipedia, Skinner was an author, inventor, advocate for social reform and poet. He was the Edgar Pierce Professor of Psychology at Harvard University from 1958 until retirement in 1974. He invented the operant conditioning chamber, innovated his own philosophy of science called Radical Behaviorism, and founded his own school of experimental research psychology — the experimental analysis of behavior. His analysis of human behavior culminated in his work Verbal Behavior, which has recently seen enormous increase in interest experimentally and in applied settings. He discovered and advanced the rate of response as a dependent variable in psychological research. He invented the cumulative recorder to measure rate of responding as part of his highly influential work on schedules of reinforcement. In a recent survey, Skinner was listed as the most influential psychologist of the 20th century. He was a prolific author, publishing 21 books and 180 articles.

Fuzzy has written a great application for the website which displays the names of Alumni who have a Birthday in the current month. Be sure to scroll down the page and see the list of Alumni Birthdays in the right column.

If anyone can offer any important information about Chi Delta Rho, please comment here or use the Contact Us page to send me a message with the relevant information.

Things I am looking for:
- A list of all Chapters (schools)
- Official Colors, Mottos, Slogans, Values, etc
- Was there a headquarters?

…I am planning to add a Delta Kappa entry to Wikipedia as well, once the Chi Delta Rho page is underway and has some “guts” to it.

Gentlemen,
Some of us attend all the meetings and have been keeping “The Dream” alive since the suspension. Others have not shown as much commitment. I would like to see as many of our Brothers sign on for this important piece to our re-colonization. This is *OUR* fraternity. It is time for everyone who has not been involved since the time of suspension to stand up and take action as we near re-colonization in Whitewater. I have served as Alumni President since the suspension, have attended all the meetings and have attended all the functions (fun and not fun), and I am willing to serve on this important board.

My goal is not to guilt anyone into this effort, but let you all know that the more people we have involved, the less the burden will be on the highly committed few of the past. Please remember what Lambda Chi Alpha means to you and how it has affected your life–please let your conscience guide you in keeping our awesome organization alive and prosperous for future generations. I can only hope that some day my two sons, Ryan and Bryce, will become members of Lambda Chi Alpha, the best fraternity in the world.

I challenge each of you to join me in giving back to the organization that has meant so much to each of us!

I moved 7 times between my graduation in May of 2000 through July 2006.

If you are like me, you know that updating people on your address can be a real chore. But now, updating Lambda Chi Alpha on your current whereabouts has never been easier.

Just a quick update on additions to the website.

We just added a Contact Us page. Now you can email us with Alumni Updates, Births, Marriages, and general Alumni communication. Just click into the Contact Us page (see the navigation in the right column), choose a recipient and then fire off the message. It’s that simple.

Also, a lot of you have been emailing me asking when events are happening, etc. I realize that not everyone uses Facebook (where we are posting all Alumni Association meetings, etc) and not everyone has time to browse the website for updates…that is why we have added a new Events Calendar page (also in the right navigation). At this time, we are adding in all Alumni Association meetings and other important events relating to Recolonizing. You will also see some Birthdays listed. At this time, this is a short list. We hope to have it automated and include EVERYONE that we have listed on the roster, shortly. If you have events you would like added to the calendar, use the Contact Us page to make the suggestion.

Congratulations to Brother Brett Weiss (1999) and his wife Abbey, as they welcomed their son Braelin to the world today. The newest addition to the Weiss family was born today at 12 noon. Braelin weighed 8 lbs. 5 oz. and was 20″ long. Many congratulations the entire Weiss clan from the Alumni Association!
