Personal Remembrance Stories: Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, 6:30 pm

JANESVILLE— Stephen R. Van Galder, age 66, of Janesville, died Thursday, January 23, 2014 at home. He was born on June 4, 1947 in Janesville, the son of Sam and Phyllis (Hale) Van Galder. Steve graduated from Janesville High School in 1965 and UW- Whitewater in 1969, where he was a member of the Warhawk football team and served as a President of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. A Janesville resident all his life, he married Suzanne Sullivan on June 5, 1971 in Janesville. Steve was a member of Morning Rotary, the United Motor Coach Association and other motor coach organizations. He served on many Boards of Directors to include: Wisconsin Motor Coach Association, Mercy Hospital, Johnson Bank, and The Janesville Country Club. Steve was inducted into the Janesville Sports Hall of Fame, a recipient of The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Distinguished Alumni Award as well as the University’s Director of Athletics Award of Excellence. Steve’s father and mother started Van Galder Bus Co. with one cab and one school bus in 1947. Steve and his older brother, David, worked there while growing up and eventually took over the “wheels on the bus.” Steve later became sole owner and his expansion efforts included motor coach buses for tours expanding across the U.S. and later daily service to O’Hare International Airport. Steve sold the company to Coach USA in 1999 but remained on as president.

Steve was an amazing man, loving husband, father, grandfather, son and devoted friend to many. He passionately looked forward to his 7am tee times with his buddies every weekend till the snow would fly and sometimes after. He enjoyed solving the world’s problems and athletic events with his breakfast group at the Wedge Inn. He was an avid reader, Packer and Badger fan and loved listening to Roy Orbison. Traveling with his family was important to him. Those times were times he would leave the office “at the office.” His favorite destinations were Maui, HI, Sanibel Island, FL and Nagawicka Lake, Delafield, WI. He took great pride in caddying for his son Sam’s many golf tournaments and traveling with his daughter Sara across the country to her equestrian events. His newest joy in his life was his 20-month-old grandson, Graham.

He is survived by; his high school sweetheart and wife of 43 years, Suzanne Van Galder; a son, Sam (fiancé, Emily Diece) Van Galder; a daughter Sara (Nathan) Miller; his mother, Phyllis Van Galder; a grandson, Graham Miller all of Janesville; sisters-in-law, Lana Van Galder and her daughters: Arra (Ladel) Van Galder-Cass and Leah (Joe) Lidbury; Jeri (John) Torpy and her daughters: Jodi (Eric) Lathrop and Jennifer (Doug) Fondriest. Preceding Steve in death were his father, Sam and brother, David Van Galder and his father and mother-in-law, Vincent and Josephine Sullivan.

Services and a celebration of Steve’s life will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the Janesville Country Club from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with personal remembrance stories beginning at 6:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Heart Association of Wisconsin, UW-Whitewater Athletic Department or the Janesville YMCA. Our Charter!

October 30th, 2012

Looking back on the past four plus years of being the High Pi of Lambda-Iota Zeta in Whitewater, I am thankful for all the support the colony and I have received.

I would like to announce as of today, the Grand High Zeta has voted in favor of giving the men of Lambda-Iota Zeta their charter back! It’s been a ton of work, but I was lucky enough to be surrounded by an amazing group of young men eager to work towards one common cause. I personally would like to thank Brother Bob Hazod for his unwavering support through all the rough times we encountered. Without that support, I don’t know if I could have pushed through all the obstacles. It seems like yesterday we were told it wasn’t possible and given little to no chance at success. Thanks for everything, Brother Hazod.
I look forward to the bright future this chapter, alumni association, and fratenity has to offer. To the unwavering group of young men I have the pleasure of leading, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have earned every ounce of recognition you receive now and in the future! Here’s to setting the pace to which everyone else works to and never looking back!

Homecoming, October 20th, 2012

October 7th, 2012

Hello Brothers,

It is that time of year again. Homecoming is just around the corner and the celebration is about to begin. This year’s Homecoming will be held on October 20th. The festivities will begin at the house at 9am, shortly before the parade starts. Come help us celebrate all of the chapter’s many successes. One of which is the fact that we have had the highest overall chapter GPA on campus for 4 straight semesters. The colony is also on the cusp of receiving its charter (hopefully by the end of this fall semester).
There will be food, drink and a gift provided at the house for a $20 fee. We would also like to welcome the original founding fathers who will be in attendance for their “Last Round-Up” of their generation. They will be coming from all over the country for one last time to show their support and reconnect with their brothers. The last time most of these brothers were around was homecoming of 1998 so come share this with them. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
If you have any questions feel free to email me at nick@exteriorrenovations.com.

Memorial: Brother Terry Lawler (Omega)

October 19th, 2011

Terry Lawler2

It is with a heavy heart we post the memorial of Brother Terry Lawler (Lambda-Iota 151). Terry joined in the era right after Chi Delta Rho transitioned into Lambda Chi Alpha. Terry answered the call to assist in Recolonizing Lambda Chi Alpha in Whitewater. He was an active participant in University / Fraternity relations for many years. He will be missed not only by the people who knew him, but by the countless others who continue to be touched by his involvement with Lambda Chi Alpha.

REUNION FORMAL 2011

January 31st, 2011

100_0903

Brothers,

It’s that time of year again.  Soon, spring will arrive and the days will  get longer.  The temperatures, warmer.  Spring is the season of Rebirth and Renewal. It’s the time of the year when flowers burst forth from the ground and leaves return to our trees. It’s the time of year when younglings emerge from their hibernation sleep and take their first steps out into the world.  What better time then, for us to celebrate the Rebirth and Renewal of Lambda Chi Alpha- Lambda Iota Zeta.  To that end, we will be holding the 2nd Annual Alumni Reunion Formal this spring.

This year, we have so much to celebrate and be thankful for. We have finally achieved Colony Status after 3 long, hard years of work by High Pi Nick Wiesensel and the men of the interest group. It is because of their hard work and dedication that we are able to say proudly… We’re Back!  In addition to this phenomenal feat, we have also finally become able to reconnect with over 1/3 of our alumni base, and that number grows daily.  As we move forward in life, it’s important that we take a moment and look back at where we came from, to remember those moments in our life that made us the men we are today.  We should take the time to reflect on those bonds of brotherhood that were forged in Whitewater and designed to last a life time.

Join us as we prepare to initiate our newest brothers into the bond of Zeta Alpha Chi, and share with those who came after you and in doing so, relive your youth.  Reconnect with your brothers, old and new as Lambda Chi Alpha Lambda Iota Zeta moves toward the future.  Help us show the newest brothers in the bond the meaning of True Brotherhood.  LAMBDA CHI ALPHA……. NOT 4 YEARS, 4 LIFE.

Formal will be held in one of Geneva National Golf Resort’s beautiful and spacious Banquet halls. Dinner will be catered, and those in attendance will have their choice of Chicken or Pork Rack. Start time for the event is set for 5pm. More information on the night’s activities can be found below.

House Remodel

September 25th, 2010

A Note from the High Pi:

With the recolonization becoming a reality, I have been walking the house, trying to find little projects for the men in an attempt to help them invest in their home.  The downstairs half bath is in need of a redo.  In a perfect world, I would love to have this job completed before homecoming, however, there is much to be done with the ELC on campus and the recolonization occuring this semester, therefore, I would like to start the project this spring.  The men of the soon to be Lambda Chi Alpha Colony will be helping me with the remodel, as an investment project.  We are in desperate need of material and/or funds to finish the job on time.  That is where your support as an alumni comes in.  I am including with this note, a list of all the parts/material that will be needed for the half bath.  I am asking anyone who has extra or left over material from their own projects to please donate to this worthwhile cause.  Material can be dropped off at the house, or contact me through this website/facebook so we can set something up.  If you don’t have material but still want to contribute, monetary donations are acceptable.  All you have to do in order to make a donation, is to use the pay pal option on this website.  All donations will be greatly appreciated and will show internationals just how strong an alumni base Lambda Iota Zeta truly has.  Hope to see at homecoming 2010

The first annual Pokesapolooza was held this past weekend (07/10/10) at Tumbledown Trails in Middleton WI.  The event was an astounding success  with 13 brothers hitting the links for a full day of camaraderie, brotherhood and hi jinks.  18 holes and 5 and 1/2 hours later, we were all back in the club house, sun burned and tired but filled with great memories.  Memories like Brad R texting a special someone and forgetting to tee off to Rick L getting so wrapped up in his swing that he actually lost a club somewhere between the 15th and 17th hole. (If anyone found it, please let him know).  It was a day where big brothers got reacquainted with their little brothers; new friendships forged and everyone being brought up to speed on our recolonization efforts.

The event wasn’t without it’s awards and gifts either.  Before teeing off, Brothers received a complimentary gift bag full of tee’s,  golf balls and a golf towel.  In addition to this, the winner of the 1st annual Pokesapolooza will be immortalized on a plaque that will hang prominently in the chapter room at the house.  This year’s winner, with a score of 78 is Brother Ryan Brinza.  But wait, we don’t stop there.  where there is a low score, there is a high score.  We decided to  honor this year’s highest scoring brother with an award as well. The Duffer Award is a traveling award, and will be passed on year after year to the brother with the highest score. Each year that brother will modify the award in his own personal way, kind of like the “Chuck” award for those of you who remember.  This year’s Duffer award went to Brother Jeff Martin with a score of 154.  Not to worry though, Jeff wasn’t alone in his endeavor to attain the highest score.  3 other brothers were in the running. Maybe next year fellas.  Thanks again to all those who made this event a successful and joyous brotherhood event.  Hopefully, next year’s will be even bigger and better.

ADOPT AN INITIATE

June 14th, 2010

lamp (2)

Dear Brother,
Remember back to that time when you first associated with Lambda Chi Alpha. Remember that feeling the first time you set foot in the house as an associate member; a feeling of complete and unconditional acceptance.  Some even said they felt as if they were home for the first time.

As you progressed through your associate semester, you were guided by brothers, taught the ways of Lambda Chi Alpha.  Taught what it meant to be a man.  When you finally made it to the end of that semester, the brothers gave you their ritual and you became one of them.  Can you remember how that felt?  I’m sure words can’t begin to fully describe the emotions that overwhelmed you that day. One thing is certain though, your brothers were with you every step of the way.

Brothers were there for you every step of the way, guiding you, educating you and lifting you up, helping you become the man you are today.  There was always someone willing to lend you an ear or a helping hand.  There was always someone willing to go that extra mile to help you when you needed it.  The bond of brotherhood that grew from all of this exists to this day and is the backbone of Lambda Chi Alpha.

Today, the men of Lambda Chi Alpha –UW Whitewater need your helping hand. Lambda Iota Zeta has returned and is in the process of becoming a colony. These new initiates need you, their brother, so they can have the same experiences you and I were lucky to have.  They want to share their experiences with you as they learn from you what it means to be a brother of Lambda Chi Alpha. To that end, the Alumni Association and Housing Corp have created ADOPT AN INITIATE.

ADOPT AN INITIATE was modeled after several other successful programs such as Adopt A Soldier, Sponsor a Child and who could ever forget Adopt a Highway.  For a one time donation of $75 you will receive a picture of your initiate and a personalized letter introducing themselves and sharing with you their passion for Lambda Chi Alpha. Then each month, you will receive a letter updating you on the events of Lambda Chi Alpha as well as that of your initiate.  Your donation, along with the sharing of your memories and experiences in Lambda Chi Alpha, will help guide our new brothers in much the same way as your older brothers guided you when you were an associate member.

We understand that in this time of economic uncertainty, not everyone has the ability to donate $75 to Lambda Chi Alpha-UW Whitewater.  To that end, we would like you to consider donating whatever amount you can reasonably afford.  No one can truly put a price on all that Lambda Chi Alpha has given to its members in the past, but if they could, I’m sure $75 wouldn’t begin to cover it.  There are several options open to you should you care to donate.   You can pay by credit card by using the paypal option at www.uwwlca.com, or you can send a check or money order to:

Remember the old saying: LAMBDA CHI ALPHA.  NOT FOUR YEARS… FOR LIFE!
